The Balochistan National Party (BNP) has disapproved of the federal government’s decision to approve the 2023 census results. The party’s central committee, led by Akhtar Mengal, convened to discuss the decision and collectively rejected it.
According to the BNP, the 2023 census shows a decrease in the population of Balochistan, which they believe is incorrect. They argue that this perceived decline in population compromises the basic rights of the Balochistan people by potentially limiting their representation and access to resources.
Pakistan’s Population Grows to 241 Million
Earlier in the day, the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) announced that the country’s population had risen to 241 million. This revelation follows the Council of Common Interests (CCI) approval of the first digital census results.
According to the official PBS report, the population of Punjab stands at 127 million, while Sindh’s population is estimated at 55 million. The population growth rate was reported to be 2.55 per cent.
It’s worth noting that the digital Population and Housing Census 2023 approval was a primary agenda at the recent CCI session. This session, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, also included a briefing from the Ministry of Planning and Development on the digital census results, seeking endorsement from the constitutional forum.
