Elon Musk’s revolutionary social media network, previously known as Twitter and now rebranded as X, has introduced an intriguing feature for its paying subscribers. The new modification permits users to hide their blue verification check marks, a significant departure from traditional social media norms.
The concept of verification through the blue tick, which Musk altered to necessitate a monthly subscription fee rather than meeting specific qualifications, has undergone a massive change. Users can disguise their check marks on their profile and individual posts as part of the X Blue subscription package costing $8 per month. It should be noted, however, the check mark might still be visible in certain sections, and some specific features might unintentionally reveal the user’s active subscription status.
Controversy and Criticism Over New Verification Process
The altered process for verification on the platform has been met with significant backlash. Traditionally, the verification tick symbolised authenticity, typically awarded to public figures, media personas, and political figures.
Since Musk assumed control of the platform the previous year, he has implemented several changes to overhaul the verification process and augment the subscription service. Despite the provision to hide the blue check mark, it has sparked controversy among the user community. Some perceive this as an opportunity to preserve their privacy and evade derision for paying for verification. In contrast, others view this as undermining the badge’s value and lack of transparency on the platform.
The concern isn’t confined to the average user. Renowned celebrities like actress, social media influencer Lili Reinhart, and acclaimed author Stephen King have openly expressed their displeasure. Both share the sentiment that the once symbolic and meaningful blue check mark has now been diminished and reduced to another paid privilege for those who can afford it.
