The incident occurred within days of two other major road accidents that claimed 24 lives in Sargodha and Ormara.
On January 17, at least 14 people were killed and nine were injured when a truck carrying cargo and passengers plunged into the Galapur Bangla canal in the Kot Momin area. Rescue officials said dense fog reduced visibility, causing the driver to lose control while crossing the bridge.
The truck was carrying 23 people at the time of the crash. Seven passengers were crushed beneath the vehicle and died at the scene. The canal was dry, which prevented further casualties.
Large parts of Punjab remain under heavy fog, significantly reducing visibility during winter mornings and nights. Officials warned that poor visibility has made driving extremely dangerous on highways and rural roads.
Authorities urged motorists to reduce speed, maintain safe distances, and avoid unnecessary travel during foggy conditions to prevent further tragedies.
