Belgium will prohibit the sale of disposable vapes starting January 1, 2025, amid health and environmental concerns.
Health Minister Frank Vandenbroucke noted that disposable e-cigarettes, often containing nicotine, pose a growing health risk, particularly enticing teenagers towards addiction.
He also pointed out their environmental toll, contributing to plastic waste, hazardous chemicals, and battery pollution.
Vandenbroucke stated that while reusable vapes can aid in smoking cessation, the ban specifically targets disposables.
Belgium is the first EU nation to enact such a ban, inspired by Australia’s earlier action. Vandenbroucke has urged the European Commission to revise tobacco regulations accordingly.
Despite potential financial effects on the vape industry, some retailers, like Brussels Vapotheque, support the ban, advocating for more sustainable alternatives such as rechargeable pod systems.
