Minister for Information and Technology Shaza Fatima Khawaja recently addressed rumours about the government’s use of the new “Beep Pakistan” application, clarifying its intended purpose relative to WhatsApp.
Developed by the National Information Technology Board (NITB) and launched in August 2023 by then-Minister Aminul Haque, “Beep Pakistan” has been subject to misconceptions on social media regarding its utility as a public messaging tool.
In a statement to Al Jazeera, Minister Khawaja explained that “Beep Pakistan” is not set to replace WhatsApp for the general public but is being adopted as a secure alternative for government communications. Currently, in a trial phase within the Ministry of Information and Technology, the application involves experts and officials evaluating its effectiveness and security features.

The next step involves expanding its use to other federal ministries as part of a broader move to integrate more sophisticated electronic and IT systems within government operations. This initiative aims to enhance efficiency, reduce paper use, and cut costs in government departments.
Minister Khawaja emphasized the importance of security in government communications, noting that “Beep Pakistan” will ensure that all data and services managed through the app remain securely under government control. This approach aligns with the Pakistani government’s commitment to safeguarding privacy and operational integrity.
