A student of Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) died of his severe burn injuries in the early morning hours of today, in Karachi after having self-immolated over the university’s decision to not let him take an exam because of his late arrival.
Abdul Basit was a final year student of BDS at a private university. He reached the exam centre late after his car broke down, his family said.
Disheartened, he doused himself with petrol and set himself on fire, police said.
He was rushed to the Civil Hospital with 95 percent burns, doctors said.
His mother, however, claims that her son was killed and he did not commit suicide. “He wanted to be a doctor. He could not commit suicide. He was killed,” she said.
Sindh Governor Ishrat ul Ebad took notice of the incident and demanded a report of the incident from the vice chancellor of the private university.
Meanwhile, DIG West has constituted a probe committee to investigate the death of Abdul Basit.
The committee, comprises DSP Shadman, SHO Taimooria and SIO Taimooria, will present the report in a few days.
