On August 21, 2025, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) introduced the rugby-inspired Bronco Test to enhance the aerobic capacity and fitness levels of the Indian national cricket team, as reported by Indian media. Proposed by strength and conditioning coach Adrian le Roux and backed by head coach Gautam Gambhir, the initiative addresses fitness concerns observed during India’s recent five-Test series in England.
Participants complete five sets of shuttle runs (20m, 40m, and 60m), totalling 1,200 meters, without a break in under six minutes as part of the Bronco Test. Designed to prioritise running over gym work, it targets fast bowlers, with only Mohammed Siraj having played all matches in the England series due to fitness disparities. The test complements existing BCCI assessments like the Yo-Yo Test (minimum score 17.1) and the 2-km time trial (8:15 for bowlers, 8:30 for others).

Several top players have undergone the Bronco Test at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. A BCCI source told The Times of India, “The Bronco Test ensures clear fitness standards. Fast bowlers were not running enough, focusing too much on gym work.” Le Roux, who rejoined the BCCI in June 2025 after working with Cricket South Africa and IPL teams, emphasised running to build endurance.
The decision follows observations that some Indian pacers struggled with fitness during the England series. Le Roux’s approach aims to align players with international standards, enhancing performance in high-intensity formats. The Bronco Test’s rigorous demands will set a new benchmark for the team’s physical preparedness.
The Bronco Test underscores the BCCI’s commitment to elevating player fitness, crucial for competing in global tournaments. As India prepares for the upcoming series, including the 2025-26 season, the initiative could strengthen the team’s endurance and resilience, particularly for fast bowlers.
