Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari termed COP27’s “loss and damage fund” a major success.
In a Wednesday interview with Arab News, he discussed his recent seven-day trip to the U.S.
Earlier this month, FM Bilawal was in New York to host a ministerial summit of the G-77 and China bloc, the largest negotiating group of developing nations within the United Nations network. It was also Pakistan’s last conference as chairman of the group, as Cuba assumed leadership for the next year.
Bilawal Bhutto said climate activists had fought for the fund for 30 years, and he was delighted it was established during Pakistan’s G77 presidency.
The foreign minister said loss and damaged language helped them find common ground.
The foreign minister noted that the developing countries thought they had not contributed as much to the crisis due to their lesser carbon footprint.
“The agenda, or the aspiration of the G77, is exactly that. We represent the aspirations of the developing world” ‘Loss and Damage’ fund demonstrated developing nations wielding collective strength when they had a common cause, adding, “I think we were very successful in creating that consensus,” the foreign minister said.
