The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari (BBZ), claimed his party is eager to participate in future elections, regardless of the timeline.
Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari’s statement came after the Supreme Court announced the general in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Punjab assemblies should be held within 90 days. However, he also emphasized the need to grasp the essence of the Supreme Court’s thorough decision.
A few hours after the country’s top court ruled on Wednesday that elections for the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Punjab assemblies must be held no later than 90 days following their dissolution, the PPP leader made his remarks. Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial pronounced the judgment in the suo moto case as a three-to-two majority.
In a meeting with party leaders on Wednesday in Lahore, he stated that the PPP was always prepared for elections, regardless of whether they occurred within three months.
Bilawal advised his party to prepare for the next elections. He stated that the party’s legislative board would decide on this subject and that the candidate who outperformed their past performance would obtain the nomination.
In addition, he permitted candidates for national and provincial assemblies one week to complete their paperwork.
In response to the Supreme Court’s instruction to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to discuss with President Dr. Arif Alvi to select a date for general elections to the Punjab assembly, Bilawal’s appeal for his party to begin electoral campaigning has set the tone for national elections.
According to the order, the governor of KP must communicate with the ECP before announcing the election date.
The highest court found that the election timeline was “extremely critical.” It further said that the Constitution allows for two election window periods: 60 days if the assembly is dissolved after its term has been completed and 90 days if it is dissolved before the end of its term.
In addition, the court ordered the federal government to ensure that elections were conducted in line with the Constitution.
