The United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the quake at a magnitude of 4.6, with its centre 65 kilometres east-southeast of Uthal, Balochistan, and at a depth of 10 kilometres. Although no injuries or damage were reported, residents panicked as buildings swayed.
Pakistan experiences seismic activity due to its location at the boundaries of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. The northward movement of the Indian plate into the Eurasian plate keeps South Asia susceptible to earthquakes.
The recent quake in Barkhan reminds us of the region’s geological instability; fortunately, this event and previous ones did not result in loss of life or significant damage to property.
