The Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) has concluded its prolonged sit-in outside Islamabad’s National Press Club (NPC).
The sit-in, lasting over 30 days, was present since December 20, 2023, and was demonstrating against enforced disappearances and extra-judicial killings. Dr. Mahrang Baloch, an activist and one of the protest organizers, announced their return to Balochistan. They plan to hold a rally there on January 27.
The NPC Islamabad filed a complaint with the Kohsar Police Station to remove the protesters. The NPC’s administration cited security concerns, as the venue frequently hosts high-profile political and social personalities. The administration also mentioned financial losses due to the prolonged sit-in, which deterred political and social events at the NPC. Following the complaint, Islamabad police cracked down on the protesters last month, dismantling their camps and arresting many. This action was initially defended by the government but sparked nationwide outrage.
In response to the crackdown, all Baloch protesters were released after a week-long detention. This followed widespread outcry over the government’s actions. Earlier in the month, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) had instructed local authorities and police not to hinder or forcibly remove the Baloch marchers. Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani issued these orders on a petition filed by Sammi Deen Baloch, a Baloch activist and one of the protesters, against harassment and forceful removal attempts.
