Bajur Police Arrested A Man Over Social Media Hoax About British Female Visitor

The power of social media can be both a blessing and a curse, as demonstrated by a recent event in Tali, Pakistan. A man from the Bajaur district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has been put behind bars following a dubious post on his Facebook account.

Mohammad Gulab posted on Facebook about a supposed British woman named Ella, who had allegedly journeyed to Salarzai Tehsil in the Bajaur district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to be with her Pakistani love, Mohammad Ishaq. Gulab’s Facebook post included a picture of Ishaq, his friend, and a seemingly random image of a foreign woman.

The Consequences of False Reporting

Upon discovering this post, the local Bajaur police reacted promptly, rushing to the area to ensure the foreigner’s safety. However, upon arrival, it became clear that no British woman was present, revealing Gulab’s post as nothing more than a hoax, and Gulab was arrested.

The Bajaur district police officer stated that a case under the relevant cybercrime laws was filed against him. The KP police department emphasized that disseminating false news on social media is a serious offence punishable under Pakistani law.

The event stands out amid a backdrop of multiple actual instances where foreign women have come to Pakistan after forming relationships with local men online. Among such instances, the case of Anju, an Indian woman who converted to Islam, became Fatima and married her Pakistani Facebook friend in Upper Dir, stands out.

The power of social media in shaping human relationships became more prominent as four foreign women arrived in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, within a single month, each intending to unite with Pakistani men they met on social media.

One of these women is Rosa, a 49-year-old woman from Mexico who arrived in Pakistan fully documented to marry 18-year-old Izaz Ali from Buner, KP. Another is 36-year-old Nicola from Chile, who married 27-year-old Ikramulah of Charsadda in KP.

The most recent arrival was a Chinese woman seeking love in Lower Dir after falling for a Pakistani resident through a social media platform.
