Babar Azam announced his resignation from the Pakistan cricket team’s white-ball captaincy in a late-night post on Tuesday.
Previously, Azam had stepped down from all formats’ leadership following Pakistan’s underperformance at the 2023 ODI World Cup in India. Although fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi briefly took over as the T20I captain, Babar was reinstated in March 2024.
However, his second stint as captain proved challenging, culminating in Pakistan’s early exit from the 2024 T20 World Cup. During this tournament, Pakistan suffered unexpected losses, including a defeat to the USA, a significantly lower-ranked team, and a critical match against India.
Amid growing pressure following these performances and a recent Test series loss to Bangladesh at home, Babar decided to step down. In his statement on the social platform X, Babar expressed his gratitude and reasons for his resignation:
“Dear Fans,
Today, I am sharing some news with you. Last month, I notified the PCB and Team Management of my decision to resign as the captain of the Pakistan men’s cricket team.
Leading this team has been a profound honor, yet I find it necessary to step down and concentrate on my role as a player.
The responsibilities of captaincy, while rewarding, have significantly increased my workload. I wish to prioritize my performance, enjoy my batting, and cherish time with my family, which brings me immense joy.
This decision allows me to focus more on my personal growth and playing career. I am grateful for your constant support and belief in my capabilities. Your enthusiasm is invaluable to me.
I am proud of our achievements and look forward to continuing my contribution to the team as a player.
Thank you for your love and support.”
This move marks a pivotal moment in Babar’s career, emphasizing his desire to enhance his performance and well-being by reducing his responsibilities.
