Pakistan captain Babar Azam reflected on his team’s defeat in their opening match of the 2024 T20 World Cup against the USA in Dallas, acknowledging tactical missteps.
The match concluded dramatically with a Super Over, in which the USA edged out Pakistan by five runs. In the decisive over, the USA posted 18-1, surpassing Pakistan’s 13-1.
In his post-match comments, Babar pointed out the team’s early failures. “We didn’t use the initial six overs effectively. Losing wickets in quick succession always sets you back,” he stated.
Despite a middle-game recovery, further losses stalled their momentum. “My partnership with Shadab showed promise until we lost two quick wickets,” he added.
The skipper called for improvements in bowling and middle-order batting. He critiqued the bowlers’ early performance and emphasized the need for strategic enhancements.
“Our spinners struggled to secure wickets during the crucial middle overs,” Babar remarked, identifying another area for improvement.
He praised the USA team for their comprehensive performance. “The USA outplayed us across all facets of the game,” he conceded.
Babar also commented on the pitch conditions, noting the challenges it posed. He expressed optimism about Pakistan’s ability to bounce back in upcoming games.
Notable performances included India-born Netravalkar’s tight bowling, which limited Pakistan to 159/7. The USA’s response was highlighted by Nitish Kumar’s last-ball boundary, which tied the score and forced the Super Over.
Mohammad Amir faced difficulties in the Super Over, contributing to the USA’s 18-run total through wides and erratic fielding. Netravalkar’s crucial wicket of Iftikhar Ahmed and a final ball that thwarted a second Super Over capped the match.
