In a recent development, Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, the former interior minister and the current Awami Muslim League (AML) chairman, was taken into custody on Sunday at a private residential community in Rawalpindi.
Sources revealed that the Islamabad Police, in conjunction with other operatives in civilian attire, detained Rashid, a known associate of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and two others, including his nephew. The apprehension occurred in the third phase of a well-known residential society.
Rashid’s legal counsel, Sardar Abdul Razzak Khan, verified the occurrence, sharing that the law enforcement officials, supported by several plainclothes personnel, conducted the operation that resulted in the senior politician’s detention. Sheikh Rashid’s nephew and former Member of the National Assembly (MNA), Sheikh Rashid Shafiq, issued a video statement about this event. He articulated that the law enforcement agencies have informed the judiciary that his uncle was not a subject of interest in any ongoing investigations.
He solemnly requested the assurance of Rashid’s safety, emphasizing that the federal and Punjab governments should be accountable if harm befalls him.
Shafiq continued by stating that his elder brother, Sheikh Shakir, and a household staff member named Imran were also taken during the operation. He reiterated the demand for a clear statement regarding the reasons behind this unexpected detention, highlighting Rashid’s longstanding commitment to moral and altruistic politics.
