In an unprecedented agricultural achievement, an Australian farm received certification for cultivating the world’s largest blueberry, matching the size of a ping pong ball.
Harvested in November and subsequently frozen, this remarkable blueberry measures an impressive 3.93 cm in diameter and weighs 20.4 grams, making it almost ten times the size of average blueberries.
Previously, a farmer from Western Australia held the record for the largest berry. However, the Costa Group has claimed this title with their new variety, the Eterna, developed to meet the rising demand for larger blueberries.
Brad Hocking, the mastermind behind this achievement, attributes the success to the Eterna variety’s high yield and the favourable conditions at their Corindi farm in Northern New South Wales.
The discovery was a source of amazement for Hocking’s team, which encountered competition from other organizations vying for the same title. The record-breaking moment was confirmed when the berry was officially weighed, marking a historic first.
After a meticulous 12-week review, Guinness World Records validated the giant berry, symbolizing a milestone in agricultural innovation and commitment.
Despite the berry’s extraordinary size, Hocking humorously noted his team’s reluctance to taste this unique specimen instead of appreciating its significance from afar.
The Eterna variety maintains the sweetness and texture characteristic of smaller blueberries. This giant blueberry’s legacy will be preserved with a resin cast, marking a significant moment in agricultural history that has captured global attention.
