Atletico Madrid lost to Botafogo 1-0 and were eliminated from the Club World Cup, while Botafogo progressed to the last 16.

Atletico Madrid needed a significant win to advance in Group B of the Club World Cup, and they achieved a 1-0 victory over Botafogo at Pasadena’s Rose Bowl, where 22,992 fans were in attendance. Antoine Griezmann scored the only goal in the 87th minute, converting a cross from Julian Alvarez.

Paris Saint-Germain’s 2-0 win over Seattle Sounders eliminated Atletico on goal difference. With six points, Botafogo advanced alongside PSG. Coach Diego Simeone expressed his frustration: “We played our hearts out, but it wasn’t enough.”

Botafogo began the match with strong momentum, as Jefferson Savarino tested Atletico’s Jan Oblak early on. While Atletico dominated possession, a potential penalty for Alvarez was overturned after a VAR review revealed a foul. Botafogo came close to scoring in the 67th minute when Igor Jesus had a chance, but Oblak made a crucial save to keep the game scoreless until Griezmann’s late goal. The sweltering midday kickoff presented challenges for both teams.

Botafogo’s surprise victory over PSG ensured their advancement, while Atletico’s heavy 4-0 loss to PSG in their opener proved detrimental. This match highlights Botafogo’s increasing global prominence.
