Johnny Depp’s latest film, Jeanne du Barry, has recently been in the spotlight due to an assault allegation against its director, Maiwenn Le Besco.
The accusation comes from Edwy Plenel, the editor of Medipart Magazine, who claims that Le Besco attacked him at a restaurant in Paris’s seventh arrondissement just weeks before the movie’s premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
According to a police report filed on March 7th, Le Besco allegedly grabbed Plenel’s hair and spat it on his face without saying anything during the incident in February. Interestingly, Medipart Magazine published articles about rape accusations against Le Besco’s ex-husband, Luc Besson, which could have fueled tension between the two.
French newspaper Le Figaro reported on the event, stating that Le Besco hastily left the restaurant after the incident, with staff members corroborating the story and identifying her as the assailant. Plenel’s lawyer, Pierre-Emmanuel Blard, spoke to the press about the attack, emphasizing that even if the act did not cause physical harm, it should not go unpunished.
Jeanne du Barry marks Johnny Depp’s return to the big screen after his highly publicized defamation trial against Amber Heard. Depp emerged victorious from the trial, with the court order Heard to pay $15 million in damages. Depp’s lawyers, Benjamin Chew and Camille Vazquez stated that the actor is eager to put this painful chapter of his life behind him and plans to donate the awarded money to charity.
