On May 20, 2025, Pakistan’s federal cabinet promoted Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir to Field Marshal, a rare honour in the nation’s military history.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) announced that Munir will be the first Field Marshal since General Ayub Khan in 1965.

Field Marshal Munir expressed his gratitude to Allah Almighty and dedicated his honour to Pakistan’s armed forces, martyrs, veterans, and the nation. He stated, “This is not a personal achievement, but a tribute to the armed forces and the people of Pakistan.” He thanked President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and the cabinet for their trust. Munir emphasised that the rank is a “national trust” that demands sacrifice, highlighting that “millions of Asims” are ready to serve.

President Zardari, Prime Minister Sharif, federal ministers, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, and service chiefs congratulated Munir on his elevation. The promotion recognises his leadership since becoming COAS in November 2022, when he oversaw operations against terrorism and economic stabilisation efforts.

The promotion ignited extensive discussions on social media, highlighting Munir’s service. Analysts interpret this move as a sign of military continuity amid ongoing regional tensions. Munir’s term has focused on enhancing border security and combating militancy.

The rare promotion to the rank of Field Marshal significantly enhances Munir’s status as Pakistan faces challenges such as the $4.9 billion external financing plan for fiscal year 2025-26 and the targets set by the IMF for reserve levels. This honour highlights the military’s role in promoting national unity, and Munir’s leadership is expected to influence Pakistan’s strategic priorities. Further details on the implications of this promotion are still pending.
