Belarusian tennis star Aryna Sabalenka achieved a long-sought victory at the US Open, defeating American Jessica Pegula 7-5, 7-5 in the women’s final on Saturday.
Despite facing a crowd largely favouring her American opponent at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Sabalenka broke Pegula’s serve in the final game to clinch the championship. Overcoming a set deficit twice, she expressed immense joy and relief at her victory, saying, “So many times I thought I was so close to getting the US Open title. Finally, I got this beautiful trophy.”
The final was Pegula’s first at a major tournament. She entered the competition in top form, having recently won in Toronto, but she could not counter Sabalenka’s powerful gameplay.
Sabalenka’s journey to the US Open title was marked by resilience. Known for the tiger tattoo on her arm, symbolizing her fighting spirit, she faced numerous challenges this year, including injuries and illness that impacted her season. Yet, she returned to form by winning the Cincinnati tune-up event and losing only one set on her way to the US Open final.
Reflecting on her path to victory, Sabalenka remarked, “I faced a lot of challenges on and off the court. That’s why it’s very special: no matter what, I kept coming back stronger and learning from each experience. I never gave up on this dream, which means so much to finally win.”
Sabalenka’s tiger tattoo has resonated with fans, inspiring tributes like a young fan’s temporary tattoo and matching outfit during the tournament. In a playful post-victory moment, Sabalenka tapped a tiger tattoo on her performance coach Jason Stacy’s forehead, a promise he fulfilled for her reaching the final.
