Arsenal’s title race blow became the defining story of Saturday’s Premier League action after the Gunners lost 2-1 at home to Bournemouth. The result denied Mikel Arteta’s side the chance to open a 12-point lead and shifted momentum back toward Manchester City in the title battle.
It was Arsenal’s third defeat in four matches, a sharp downturn at a crucial point in the season. With City holding two games in hand and set to host Arsenal next weekend, the pressure has now intensified at the top. Just weeks ago, Arsenal were chasing an unprecedented quadruple. However, defeats in the League Cup final and FA Cup had already dented that dream before this latest setback raised fresh doubts over their push for a first league title in 22 years.
Arteta admitted his side had fallen short of their usual level. He described the defeat as “a big punch in the face” after Arsenal failed to respond well when the game turned against them.
Bournemouth took the lead when Junior Kroupi reacted quickest to Adrien Truffert’s deflected cross. Viktor Gyokeres later equalised from the penalty spot, but Arsenal again struggled to create enough in the final third. Alex Scott then finished a slick team move in the 74th minute to secure the win. The goal exposed defensive frailties that had previously been central to Arsenal’s strong title challenge.
The victory also carried major significance for Bournemouth. The side climbed to 10th place and extended its unbeaten run to 11 games, strengthening hopes of a push toward the European spots.
Elsewhere, Brentford and Everton missed the chance to move level on points with fifth-placed Liverpool after a 2-2 draw. Igor Thiago scored twice for Brentford, taking his season total to 21 Premier League goals and moving to within one of Erling Haaland in the Golden Boot race. Beto and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall scored for Everton, with the latter finding the net in stoppage time to rescue a point.
Brighton and Hove Albion remained firmly in the mix for a Champions League place after beating Burnley 2-0. Mats Wieffer scored both goals as Fabian Hurzeler’s side claimed a fifth win in six games and moved to within three points of the top five.
On Friday, West Ham United beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 4-0 thanks to two goals each from Konstantinos Mavropanos and Valentin Castellanos. The win lifted the Hammers above Tottenham and out of the bottom three, while Wolves stayed last in the standings.
