The country’s political tensions have escalated after the arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan, the governments of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab have called for army assistance in maintaining law and order.
The Ministry of Interior has granted the request from the Punjab government and approved the deployment of ten companies of army troops to work with the district administration in restoring peace.
The federal order issued by the Ministry of Interior, citing Article 245 of the Constitution and Section 4 (3) (ii) of the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997, authorized the deployment of Pakistan Army troops across Punjab province to aid civil power.
The deployment details, including the number of troops and assets and the areas and dates of deployment, will be determined through consultation with the MO Dte and GHQ. The de-requisition date of the deployment will be decided after mutual consultation between both stakeholders.
In the meantime, Punjab police have taken action against those involved in attacks on government property, the police force, and law enforcement agencies.
945 individuals involved in violent acts and vandalism have been arrested across the province. Over 130 police officers and law enforcement personnel have been seriously injured during these incidents.
The police spokesperson reported that over 25 vehicles belonging to the police and government agencies were destroyed or burned. Additionally, protestors attacked more than 14 government buildings, resulting in looting and significant damage to government property.
Punjab Inspector General Dr. Usman Anwar stated that strict legal action is being taken against those who challenge the state’s authority and the law. He emphasized that individuals who injure citizens, police officers, and personnel, and those who damage property will be brought to justice.
