Arizona has indicted 18 individuals for attempting to manipulate the 2020 election results in favour of Donald Trump.
As announced by the state’s Attorney General Kris Mayes on Wednesday, felony charges are aimed at both local and out-of-state Republicans linked to a conspiracy that sought to illegitimately allocate Arizona’s electors to Trump, who lost the election.
Among those indicted are key figures, including Rudy Giuliani, Trump’s attorney, and other prominent members like former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and lawyers Jenna Ellis and John Eastman. The Washington Post disclosed these names, although some remain redacted pending official notification.
While Trump was not charged, he was named an unindicted co-conspirator. This indictment is part of broader efforts across states like Michigan, Georgia, and Nevada to hold accountable those who propagated Trump’s unfounded claims of an electoral win.
The action follows the narrative that despite Joe Biden’s legitimate victory in Arizona by over 10,000 votes, some Republican officials continued to assert, without evidence, that Trump was the true winner. The accused had even signed documents falsely stating Trump’s victory, contributing to efforts aimed at obstructing the formal certification of Biden’s win on January 6, 2021.
These charges emerge as Trump campaigns for re-election, asserting claims of a stolen 2020 election. His ongoing allegations play into the larger political drama in Arizona, a pivotal battleground state marked by intense electoral disputes.
