Following the successful acquisition of a 75% stake in Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), business magnate Arif Habib has outlined a comprehensive revival strategy. The plan involves a massive capital injection and a complete operational overhaul for the national carrier.
Speaking on the acquisition, Arif Habib stated that Rs135 billion was paid for the stake. He revealed that approximately Rs125 billion of this will be directly invested in the airline’s development over the next year.
A central pillar of the plan is a dramatic fleet expansion. Habib aims to increase PIA’s operational fleet from 18 to 62 aircraft. This will involve modernising existing aircraft and introducing new units to the fleet.
Habib emphasised that improving passenger experience is a top priority. The investment will target enhanced maintenance, onboard services, and overall service quality. “We will do everything possible to provide the best services to PIA passengers,” he stated.

He also addressed PIA’s employees, describing them as highly capable. The new management promises to provide a “strong platform” for the staff to excel and contribute to the airline’s turnaround.
The Arif Habib Consortium confirmed Fauji Fertiliser Company as a strategic partner in the PIA acquisition. Consortium representatives welcomed the partnership, stating it would positively impact the revival efforts.
Arif Habib framed the privatisation as a success for the nation and a signal to encourage further investment in Pakistan. He noted that even the competing Lucky Cement Consortium (final bid: Rs134 billion) represents significant investor interest.
The Arif Habib-led consortium presents a clear, capital-intensive roadmap. The goal is to restore PIA’s operational strength, service reputation, and position as Pakistan’s flagship carrier in the regional aviation market.
