Prominent businessman Arif Habib has said that turning Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) into a profitable carrier remains the top priority, while making it clear that future job security will depend strictly on performance.
Speaking to the media in Karachi, Habib assured employees that the airline’s workforce would be protected, emphasising that PIA achieved world-class status in the past because of its staff. He said the goal is to revive that legacy through efficiency, accountability, and improved service standards.
“Pakistan has won, and we will restore PIA’s old reputation,” Habib said, adding that the airline’s revival requires a performance-driven culture. He reiterated that only employees who deliver results will remain with the organisation, stressing that merit and productivity will guide all decisions.

Habib also clarified that the existing agreement does not permit any change to PIA’s name, underscoring the importance of preserving the airline’s national identity as part of its turnaround strategy.
Highlighting PIA’s market potential, he said that around 14 million Pakistanis live abroad, with the number rising to more than 70 million when their families at home are included. He described this large diaspora as a strong and consistent customer base that can support the airline’s long-term growth.
Habib further noted that PIA holds priority status for Hajj and Umrah operations, calling it a strategic advantage. He said ongoing efforts aim to channel a greater share of Pakistani travel through the national carrier, strengthening revenues and improving operational sustainability.
According to Habib, a combination of disciplined management, employee performance, and targeted use of PIA’s natural market advantages will be key to restoring the airline’s profitability and global standing.
