Lautaro Martinez’s extra-time goal clinched a 1-0 victory for Argentina over Colombia on Sunday, securing a record 16th Copa America title at Hard Rock Stadium.

An 82-minute delay due to security and crowd issues preceded Martinez’s decisive strike, his fifth of the tournament, which led all scorers.

This victory represents Argentina’s third consecutive major tournament win, following their successes in the 2021 Copa America and the 2022 World Cup.

The emotional stakes were high as Argentina’s captain, Lionel Messi, left the field injured in the 66th minute, visibly upset while watching from the bench. The match also marked an emotional farewell for Angel Di Maria in his final appearance for the national team.

Having last won the Copa America in 2001, Colombia found the match frustrating as efforts seldom went their way. Entry chaos and heat exhaustion issues among fans marked the initial experience at the stadium. Officials eventually resolved these issues by allowing unchecked entry, enabling the match to proceed.

Both teams struggled to find their rhythm in the match’s early stages. Colombia’s Jhon Cordoba hit the post in the seventh minute, and Argentina failed to capitalize on their opportunities.

Now playing club football in Miami, Messi almost connected with a free-kick Nicolas Tagliafico narrowly headed off target. The first half ended without much fanfare, and even Shakira’s halftime performance couldn’t significantly improve the match’s quality.

Argentina narrowly avoided a setback when James Rodriguez’s corner kick found Davinson Sanchez, whose header sailed over the bar. Di Maria’s dynamic run later forced a crucial save from Colombia’s keeper, Camilo Vargas, highlighting a moment of expected quality.

A pivotal moment occurred when Messi, possibly in his last major tournament, had to leave the pitch due to injury, replaced by Nicolas Gonzalez, with tears streaming down his face.

Although Argentina’s goal was ruled offside in the 75th minute, the match extended into extra time. Miguel Borja almost ended the deadlock with a half-chance.

The decisive moment came when Leandro Paredes intercepted the ball in midfield and passed it to Giovani Lo Celso, who perfectly set up Martinez for a precise finish, securing Argentina’s championship.
