Award-winning Indian composer AR Rahman has recorded a 30-minute performance to support Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign. Rahman is the first South Asian international artist to endorse Harris, who is of mixed Indian and African origin, for the U.S. presidency.
AR Rehman’s effort aims to boost Harris’s visibility before the November 5 elections, in which she seeks to become the first Black woman and the first woman overall to become President of the United States.
Shekar Narasimhan, Chairperson of the Asian-American and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) Victory Fund, commented, “With this performance, AR Rahman has joined a chorus of leaders and artists advocating for progress and representation in America.” The AAPI Victory Fund is a political committee that encourages and mobilizes Asian Americans and Native Hawaiians to participate actively in shaping the country’s future.
Narasimhan emphasized the significance of Rahman’s contribution, stating, “This is not just a musical event—it’s a call to action for our communities to engage and vote for the future we want.”
The AAPI Victory Fund also noted that Rahman’s endorsement highlights the pivotal role of Asian American and Pacific Islander voters in this election cycle and underscores the growing support for the Harris-Walz ticket. A teaser video featuring Rahman and MR Rangaswami, founder of Indiaspora, has also been released to build anticipation for the full performance.
The performance, which will air on the AAPI Victory Fund’s YouTube channel on October 13 at 8 p.m. ET, will feature some of Rahman’s most beloved songs and include messages promoting Harris’s candidacy and commitment to the AAPI community.
