Apple is preparing a major overhaul of Siri that could turn the voice assistant into an AI chatbot similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.
According to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, Apple is developing the new Siri internally under the codename “Campos.” The chatbot-style assistant is expected to debut as part of iOS 17 and may take centre stage at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in June 2026.
The updated Siri will support both voice and text inputs. This approach aligns with comments previously made by Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering, Craig Federighi. He has said that Siri should function more like a chatbot and remain easily accessible whenever users need assistance.
Industry observers say Apple’s strategy reflects a broader shift driven by the rapid success of AI chatbots. Competitors have moved quickly to integrate conversational AI into consumer products, increasing pressure on Apple to respond.
Apple and Google already admitted to powering Siri using Gemini, but now, Siri will supposedly get a new, full-on chatbot interface.

Apple’s AI ambitions may also face fresh competition from OpenAI, which is reportedly exploring hardware products under the guidance of former Apple design chief Jony Ive.
The company has acknowledged challenges in keeping pace with rivals in the field of artificial intelligence. Apple has delayed the launch of a more personalised version of Siri several times over the past few years.
During that period, Apple tested AI technologies from multiple firms, including OpenAI and Anthropic. It ultimately selected Google Gemini as its primary AI partner, a collaboration both companies confirmed earlier this month.
As competition intensifies, the launch of an AI-driven Siri could signal a turning point for Apple. Analysts say the move may reshape the company’s approach to smart assistants and help it remain competitive in the fast-evolving AI landscape.
