Apple has upgraded its Game Porting Toolkit, introducing new capabilities that facilitate the porting of Mac games to iOS and iPadOS platforms. This enhancement ensures that games adapted for iOS and iPadOS will likely maintain the same features and functionality as their macOS counterparts.
During last month’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2024), Apple introduced several updates for macOS Sequoia, including the new version of the Game Porting Toolkit. This tool originally enabled developers to adapt popular AAA Windows titles for macOS. With the forthcoming Game Porting Toolkit 2.0, developers can transfer these games to iPhones and iPads.
At WWDC, Apple confirmed that macOS Sequoia and the updated toolkit would be available later this year. A session at the conference, highlighted by 9to5Mac, revealed that developers could soon port PC games directly to Apple’s mobile devices.
The current toolkit streamlines the conversion of DirectX graphics, common in Windows games, to MetalFX, Apple’s counterpart for macOS. The updated toolkit will expand this feature, enabling developers to adapt games initially ported to macOS for use on iOS and iPadOS. These adaptations will likely support features such as controller use and Spatial Audio on compatible Apple devices.
However, Apple TV will not receive support in this update despite its robust hardware capabilities, such as the A15 Bionic chip that also powers the iPhone 13 and supports sophisticated games.
Developers eager to try the new features can download the latest beta versions of macOS Sequoia. Apple plans to launch Game Porting Toolkit 2.0 later this year, coinciding with the release of macOS Sequoia and updates to iOS 18, iPadOS 18, watchOS 11, and tvOS 18.
