The future of the royal titles held by King Charles, Prince William, and Kate Middleton is being questioned following calls from an anti-monarchy group to strip the senior royals of their titles.
Graham Smith, Chief Executive of Republic, a group advocating for the election of an independent head of state, argues that the monarchy’s privileges and obligations should be abolished to foster equality among citizens.
According to GB News, Smith emphasized that the monarchy’s role is outdated. He stated that a move towards a republic would complete the democratic evolution that began in the 17th century. He argued for a transformation where individuals are seen as citizens with equal rights, not subjects under a monarchy.
When asked about the specific implications for the royal family if the UK were to adopt a republic, Smith explained that in such a scenario, royal and aristocratic titles would be incompatible with the principles of a republic. Consequently, figures like King Charles would adopt the surname Windsor, becoming ordinary citizens with the same responsibilities and rights as others, including the obligation to pay taxes.
The proposal by the Republic suggests that if the royals were to lose their titles, they would no longer carry the honorifics “His or Her Royal Highness,” nor would they retain any prince or princess titles. This would significantly shift the traditional roles and recognitions afforded to the British royal family.
