Broadcaster and journalist Amol Rajan has announced that he is stepping away from his role on BBC Radio 4 Today programme after five years on air.
The 42-year-old joined the flagship morning show in 2021 and quickly established a strong rapport with listeners through his distinctive presenting style and high-profile interviews. His departure marks the end of his daily radio duties, rather than a complete exit from broadcasting.
Alongside his radio work, Rajan has continued to expand his television career. He will remain the host of University Challenge and will also continue producing the Radical with Amol Rajan podcast.
Explaining his decision, Rajan said that leaving Today felt emotional but was also timely. He praised the programme’s editorial leadership and described the team as consistently world-class. He compared his experience to playing for legendary sports teams, highlighting the newsroom’s professional standards and intensity.

Rajan also reflected on his interview work, saying he remains deeply proud of Amol Rajan Interviews. He described the opportunity to travel widely and spend extended time with influential figures as an unforgettable privilege.
Despite the announcement, the BBC has not yet named a successor to Rajan on the Today programme. The broadcaster is expected to provide further updates in due course.
Rajan’s move signals a shift in focus rather than a step back, as he continues to balance major television projects and long-form journalism.
