Ali Amin Gandapur on Imran Khan’s release dominated a wide-ranging interview in which the PTI leader addressed negotiations, party divisions, and criticism from within his ranks.
Speaking to ARY News programme ‘Khabar’, Gandapur said talks for the jailed PTI founder’s release took place largely on Imran Khan’s terms. However, he accepted partial responsibility for the failure to secure his freedom. At the same time, he defended his loyalty and political decisions throughout the process.
He stated that Mohsin Naqvi made serious efforts during negotiations. According to Gandapur, he personally had limited meetings with Imran Khan, while others conveyed information that did not reflect the ground reality. He added that Barrister Saif met the PTI founder during key moments, including discussions around Senate elections and the budget.
Gandapur said talks resumed after October 5. He explained that draft terms of reference were prepared after protests reached D-Chowk, which created political pressure. Moreover, he claimed the founder was willing to negotiate “for Pakistan.”

During the interview, Gandapur acknowledged internal weaknesses within PTI. He admitted that defying instructions to halt at Sangjani was a disastrous decision. Nevertheless, he argued that infighting, abusive campaigns, and distorted narratives within the party caused greater damage.
He criticised certain internal groups for spreading misinformation. In his view, such actions harmed the jailed leader’s cause and weakened public support.
Gandapur also addressed tensions involving Aleema Khan. While expressing respect for her, he questioned the protest mobilisation outside Adiala Jail and some internal decisions. He revealed that he had personally appealed to Imran Khan’s sisters to help facilitate his release. Furthermore, he warned that internal rivalries over political succession were undermining party unity.

Responding to criticism from Salman Akram Raja, Gandapur challenged his authority to demand accountability. He said sacrifices made for the party should be acknowledged first. He maintained that he answers only to the PTI founder and would respond to any formal notice if required.
In addition, he criticised overseas commentators, including Shehbaz Gill and Imran Riaz Khan. He urged them to return to Pakistan and lead protests directly rather than encourage activism from abroad. According to him, loyalty must be demonstrated through action rather than online commentary.
Despite acknowledging organisational failures, Gandapur insisted that negotiations had taken place on the founder’s terms. He concluded by reiterating that his political engagement remains solely tied to Imran Khan’s cause.
