Pakistan People Party (PPP) Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan has claimed that PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif’s covert “deal with the establishment” has finally been exposed.
Ahsan boldly asserts that Sharif’s political gymnastics have one ultimate goal: a triumphant return to power, leaving his rivals in the dust.
The seasoned politician didn’t mince words, accusing Nawaz Sharif of tactically muscling out competitors, exploiting the political landscape to engineer a clandestine pact with the powers. In a presser, Ahsan recalled his past cautions: “I always warned that given an opportunity, Nawaz Sharif would sideline everyone else. Those warnings were dismissed, but today, we’re witnessing that reality.”
“Systemic Flaws and Intra-Party Disputes”
Ahsan expressed deep concerns over the country’s governance structure or the lack thereof. He emphasized the constitutional decree that sovereignty lies with the Almighty, meant to be exercised by the people’s elected representatives. “Without truly elected representatives, how can we even speak of a functional system?” he challenged.
Ahsan didn’t hesitate to discuss internal contentions within his party, the PPP. “It’s no secret that I’ve often been at odds with the party’s stances. We don’t always see eye to eye, and that’s okay. Sometimes my perspective takes precedence, and at other times, the party’s decision dominates,” he acknowledged.
With the political atmosphere rife with unpredictability, Ahsan cast doubts over the scheduled elections’ timeline. “Given the convoluted political history, it’s anyone’s guess whether the elections will take place on January 28,” he expressed sceptically.
These revelations coincide with a turbulent time in Pakistani politics, notably marked by Nawaz Sharif’s comeback from a four-year self-exile. His return was facilitated by pre-emptive legal manoeuvres, including securing protective bail and suspending various arrest mandates, clearing his path back into Pakistan’s volatile political theatre.
Further stirring the pot was the Islamabad High Court’s recent decision to reinstate Nawaz Sharif’s appeals against prior convictions, reigniting his campaign to overturn the guilty verdicts in the corruption cases against him. With the former prime minister’s bail extended and his sentence in the Al-Azizia case momentarily halted, the political saga continues to unfold, keeping the nation’s fate hanging in the balance.
