In a series of Israeli airstrikes across southern Lebanon on Wednesday, nine civilians, including four children, lost their lives, according to a hospital director and three Lebanese security sources. These strikes were Israel’s response to Hezbollah rocket attacks that resulted in the death of an Israeli soldier.
The conflict between Hezbollah and the Israeli military along the Israel-Lebanon border has intensified over the past four months, initiated by Hezbollah’s rocket fire in solidarity with Hamas.
In the village of al-Sawana, an Israeli airstrike claimed the lives of a woman and her two children, as reported by two security sources. Another attack targeted a building in Nabatieh, resulting in the deaths of two children, three women, and a man, with seven additional individuals seeking medical treatment, confirmed Hassan Wazni, the director of the town’s hospital, and three security sources. Moreover, four Hezbollah militants were killed in separate strikes, acknowledged by both the group and security sources.
Hezbollah, while not announcing any operations on Wednesday, conveyed through the head of its executive council a vow for retaliation against the Israeli assaults on Lebanese soil.
An Israeli government spokesperson, Ilana Stein, informed journalists of rocket attacks from Lebanon on Wednesday morning, which led to the death of an Israeli woman soldier and the hospitalization of eight others. Stein emphasized Israel’s reluctance for war but assured a strong response to provocations.
UN warnings hint at the severe consequences of the ongoing conflict, emphasizing the untenable situation for thousands of displaced Israelis.
The Israeli military and government officials have reaffirmed their stance on responding to Hezbollah’s provocations. Military Chief Herzi Halevi and Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah have both made statements reflecting the tense situation and the conditions for ceasing hostilities, pointing towards a ceasefire in Gaza as a potential pivot for peace.
