Social media has erupted with praise for Ahmed al Ahmed, the bystander who courageously disarmed one of the attackers during the deadly shooting at Sydney’s Bondi Beach on Sunday, December 14. The attack left 15 people dead and dozens injured during a public gathering.
A video verified by the BBC shows Ahmed rushing toward the armed suspect, wresting the firearm from his hands. He briefly aimed it back at the attacker. The decisive action forced the gunman to retreat and is widely credited with preventing further loss of life.
Ahmed al Ahmed, 43, is a fruit shop owner from Sutherland Shire. He is married and a father of two. During the confrontation, he sustained injuries to his arm and hand and remains hospitalised, where he has undergone surgery.
Speaking outside the hospital to 7News Australia, a relative said Ahmed’s condition was stable and described him as a hero whose actions saved lives. The family expressed hope that he would make a full recovery. They also thanked medical staff for their care.

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns publicly commended Ahmed’s bravery, calling him a “genuine hero” during a press conference in Sydney. He said the incident reflected some of the nation’s deepest fears about terrorism. However, he highlighted the extraordinary courage shown by an ordinary citizen.
Minns described Ahmed’s actions as an example of selfless bravery. He noted that Ahmed placed his own life at risk to protect others in the community.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also addressed the attack. He described it as a targeted assault on Jewish Australians during the first day of Hanukkah, a time meant for celebration and faith. He reiterated that there is no place in Australia for hatred, violence or terrorism and pledged firm action to prevent such attacks in the future.

Residents recalled scenes of chaos after hearing what they described as up to 50 gunshots around 6:45 pm local time near Archer Park. Authorities estimate that nearly 1,000 people had gathered in the area to mark the start of the Jewish festival when the attack unfolded.
Emergency services responded swiftly, transporting victims to nearby hospitals as police secured the area and launched a full investigation.
