On May 19, 2025, the Sindh Assembly approved the transfer of Prince Karim Aga Khan’s properties to his son, Prince Rahim Aga Khan, and the Aga Khan Jamaat, effective February 4, 2025.
The resolution acknowledges Prince Karim’s contributions to health and culture in Sindh. It exempts the transfer from requiring legal documents, as Prince Rahim is the sole heir to the leadership of the Ismaili Jamaat.
The Sindh Aga Khan Property Bill explicitly prohibits legal challenges to property transfers involving the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN). This measure secures the uninterrupted succession of the Ismaili Jamaat’s assets, currently managed by Prince Rahim Aga Khan.

Prince Karim Aga Khan, the 49th hereditary Imam of 15 million Ismaili Muslims, has significantly impacted Sindh through AKDN’s health and education initiatives. Born in 1936 in Geneva and raised partly in Nairobi, he invested millions in poverty alleviation globally.
In a 2007 New York Times interview, he famously stated that supporting the poor through business combats extremism. His success as a racehorse owner, with champions like Shergar, added to his global profile.
Prince Rahim, the Aga Khan’s successor for Jamaat leadership, will oversee properties tied to AKDN’s operations, including hospitals and schools in Sindh. His role strengthens the Ismaili community’s institutional framework. The transfer aligns with Prince Karim’s vision of sustainable development.
The resolution underscores Sindh’s recognition of the Aga Khan’s contributions while ensuring continuity for AKDN’s work. As Prince Rahim assumes stewardship, the transfer reinforces the Jamaat’s legacy, though legal immunity concerns may prompt further scrutiny.
