James Cameron premiered the sequel to his highest-grossing film, “Avatar,” in London on Tuesday.
“Avatar: The Way of Water” returns to Pandora, where the blue Na’vi fought human colonists for the moon’s resources in the first film.
Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana return as Jake Sully and Neytiri in “The Way of Water.”
“Sky People,” the Na’vi moniker for humanity, return and are after Sully. Sully, Neytiri, and their children fled to a distant country to seek sanctuary with the Metkayina clan.
The family must swiftly master the ways of the water to survive as their nemesis approaches.
During the film’s international premiere, Worthington told Reuters, “It’s nice to share it finally.”
This is a heart-wrenching story; it’s mighty, and you hope it connects (with audiences), but we’ve broadened the world and this family unit.
Saldana said recasting was “emotional.”
“It was exciting but also quite scary since Jim had raised the stakes for himself,” she added.
Kiri is Neytiri and Sully’s daughter. Dr. Grace Augustine, played by Weaver, is her biological mother.
“It was an incredible journey,” she remarked.
“Avatar” has grossed more than $2.9 billion worldwide since its 2009 release.
Through 2028, four “Avatar” films are planned.
“I never doubted this day would arrive because I’d read all four scripts, but the scale of the undertaking, of the world-building, was daunting,” producer Jon Landau said, adding that most of the third movie had been filmed.
Reuters: “We’ll keep exploring Pandora and meeting new clans.”
