The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a substantial financing package totalling $381 million for three major projects in Pakistan’s Punjab province.
The initiatives are designed to advance agriculture, education, and health services. They aim to bolster economic growth in a region that accounts for over half of the country’s population and economic activity.
ADB Country Director for Pakistan Emma Fan emphasised the strategic importance of the investments. “Investing in education, health, and agricultural mechanisation will play a transformative role in driving the growth of Punjab.
The Approved funding is allocated across three distinct projects:
1. Punjab Climate-Resilient and Low-Carbon Agriculture Mechanisation Project
This initiative receives a $120 million concessional loan and a $4 million grant. It aims to accelerate the province’s shift to modern, disaster-resilient farming practices, benefiting approximately 220,000 rural households. The project will support large-scale mechanisation, create alternative livelihoods, and strengthen the skills of 15,000 women. A new financing model will also help small-scale farmers access advanced machinery, such as rice harvesters.
2. Responsive, Ready, and Resilient STEM Secondary Education Program
ADB has approved $107 million, including a $7 million grant, for this program. It is implemented by the Punjab School Education Department. The program will modernise secondary education and expand inclusive learning opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) across the province.
3. Punjab Nursing and Health Workforce Reform Program
A $150 million concessional loan will fund this program to enhance nursing education. It aims to strengthen workforce governance and develop disaster-resilient training facilities. The program will upgrade nursing curricula and expand faculty development. Additionally, it will introduce a digital human resource management system. A key component is the establishment of three Centres of Excellence in Lahore, Multan, and Rawalpindi. These centres will feature modern simulation labs and digital learning platforms to meet the growing demand for skilled healthcare professionals.
