Many former coworkers who worked on The Tonight Show brought to light serious concerns regarding host Jimmy Fallon’s purported unstable demeanour while working on the show.
In a recent exposé by Rolling Stone, since taking the reins in 2014, Fallon has allegedly exhibited unpredictable and volatile behaviour, which has fostered a hostile work environment per the account of some employees.
Several former team members have recounted their distressing experiences, painting a grim picture of a dream job turning into a nightmarish reality. The environment reportedly got so extreme that employees would facetiously comment about “harbouring suicidal thoughts.” The distress seems so prevalent that the dressing rooms are transformed into spaces where workers can privately release their pent-up emotions. An ex-employee detailed this environment: “The unease was palpable, as everyone, even those in higher positions, hesitated to counter Jimmy or call out his erratic behaviours. This was evident in the rapid turnover of showrunners who seemingly couldn’t withstand the pressures for long.”
Furthermore, the testimonies suggest that Fallon’s fluctuating moods had a significant influence on the overall ambience of the workplace, with one individual noting, “His mood swings were like a barometer for the day’s atmosphere; a gloomy disposition from Jimmy would invariably cast a shadow over everyone’s spirits.”
In reaction to the serious accusations detailed in the report, NBC issued a rather vague statement, sidestepping any direct mention of Fallon. Emphasizing their commitment to maintaining a respectful work atmosphere, the spokesperson stated, “We hold The Tonight Show in high regard and prioritize fostering a respectful work environment. Like any other organization, we have had instances where employees brought forward concerns, which have been duly investigated, and necessary actions have been initiated.”

Amid the rising tide of allegations, there exists a glimmer of hope that the present circumstances might pave the way for substantial improvements in the show’s working conditions. One former team member, who still harbours affection for the show and the comedic art form it represents, expressed a sincere wish for the show to undergo critical transformations that foster a healthier workplace.
“I still hold a deep affection for The Tonight Show and deeply affectionate for the comedic platform it offers. I devoted a considerable comedic platform to contributing to the show,” the individual reflected. “My earnest desire is to witness it flourish, but for that to transpire, sweeping changes are imperative, initiating a transformation in Jimmy’s approach towards his role and the team. It is high time everyone involved takes a step back, evaluates the present circumstances, and takes concerted action to amend the current trajectory.”
