Max Verstappen seized a crucial pole position for the title-deciding Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Saturday, setting up a dramatic three-way showdown with McLaren rivals Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri at the Yas Marina Circuit.
The Dutchman’s blistering lap of 1 minute, 22.207 seconds put him 0.201 seconds clear of Norris and 0.230 ahead of Piastri. This pole is vital on a track where overtaking is difficult; the winner has started from pole every year since 2015.
The 58-lap race on Sunday will decide the 2025 Formula 1 World Champion. Entering the finale, Lando Norris holds a 12-point lead over Verstappen and a 16-point advantage over his own teammate, Oscar Piastri.

Verstappen is chasing a historic fifth consecutive driver’s title, while both McLaren drivers are seeking their first championship. All three contenders have won seven races this season.
Verstappen, who clinched his first title on the last lap in Abu Dhabi in 2021, remained focused. “We find out tomorrow, don’t we? I will try and win the race,” he stated.

Norris, who will start from the front row, was pragmatic. “We just weren’t fast enough today. We’ll have to try and do it tomorrow,” he said, maintaining his goal to win the race. Piastri was content with third, stating simply, “Nicely done. Wasn’t much left.”
In a stark contrast, seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton endured another difficult weekend. He was eliminated in Q1 for the third consecutive race and crashed in final practice due to a driver error. A dejected Hamilton apologised over team radio, calling his own season “terrible.” His Mercedes teammate, George Russell, qualified fourth.
