Probe begins into dog on PM’s plane runway

Bahawalpur: The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) began on Wednesday an inquiry into random appearance of a stray dog in front of the VVIP aircraft of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif at the time of his departure from Bahawalpur airport on Nov 6.

It is learnt a three-member team of the CAA reached here and started its investigation which would also continue on Thursday (today).

The prime minister had come to Lodhran to distribute cheques among the farming community as part of the Kissan Package.

A stray dog had swiftly passed through the aircraft when it was taxing to take off on the runway forcing the pilot to bring it to a halt at the end of the apron.

The prime minister had taken a serious notice and directed his adviser Shujaat Azim to look into the matter.

The PM in his note to the adviser had reportedly expressed concern over such incidents as jackals and dogs were also seen running on runways of airports in Lahore and Islamabad.

PO KILLED: The Yazman police claimed that an under-trial absconder was killed in firing by his accomplices during an encounter at village 144/DB near Qainchi Morr on Wednesday.

Police said a team led by an ASI took absconder Raashid Mota to Marot for the recovery of snatched articles. On their return, the four accomplices riding on two bikes allegedly fired at the police party in their bid to free Raashid Mota. Consequently, a bullet hit the absconder and he died on the spot while his accomplices managed to escape when police returned the fire.

Police said the deceased absconder was wanted in several heinous crimes. His body was sent to the THQ hospital, Yazman, for the postmortem examination.

HANGED: A convict was hanged to death at the New Central Jail here on Wednesday.

According to jail officials, convict Khadim Hussain of Karani village had on Feb 14, 1999, killed his brother-in-law Abdul Latif over a family dispute.

A district and sessions judge, Bahawalpur, had awarded him death sentence on April 19, 2003.

STRIKE: The Mepco employees on Wednesday observed a strike and staged a sit-in to protest the privatization of the Mepco.

Protesters paraded the University Road and reached Farid Gate where their leaders condemned the government in their speeches and demanded withdrawal of the decision of privatization.
