ECP Registers New Parties; PTI’s Fund Case Deferred

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has approved three new political parties, namely Khadmeen-i-Sindh (KS), Pakistan Kesan Labour Party (PKLP), and Tehreek-i-Ehsas Pakistan (TEP), in the lead-up to the upcoming general elections. Details about these registrations, including the conduct of intra-party elections and party office bearer details, have been made public on the ECP’s official website, specifically highlighting the new enlistment of the Khadmeen-i-Sindh party.

ECP’s Stance on PTI’s Prohibited Funds

Separately, the commission has deferred a case concerning confiscating prohibited funds linked to PTI, with no reasons given for its removal from the scheduled hearing. Earlier in March, the ECP had outlined its reasons for rejecting PTI’s plea for cross-examining witnesses in the case, stressing that the PTI had already started confiscating disallowed funds. The commission’s findings in August 2022 indicated PTI’s receipt of donations from foreign entities, a move contradicting Pakistani laws.

The ECP emphasized PTI’s non-disclosure of multiple bank accounts and discrepancies in financial statements, terming it a significant oversight and contravening Article 17(3) of the Constitution, which mandates transparency regarding party funds’ sources.
