Islamabad High Court Probes into Imran Khan’s Detainment Conditions at Attock Jail

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has initiated an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding PTI Chairman Imran Khan’s continued incarceration despite a suspended sentence. During a recent hearing concerning Khan’s transfer to Attock Jail, IHC demanded details on the amenities provided at the detention centre. This development came after Khan’s lawyer, Sher Afzal Marwat, raised concerns about the prison conditions, emphasizing the pest infestation and inadequate roofing in the area where Khan is held.

Marwat further stressed the lack of a B-class facility in Attock Jail, suggesting that transferring Khan to the Rawalpindi facility would be a better option from a security perspective. He indicated that the transfer to Attock was intended to increase distress for Khan, who is not being treated with the entitlements befitting a B-class prisoner. This situation has also affected Khan’s family, with his wife facing potential legal action following her visit to the jail.

Authorities Defend Khan’s Jail Amenities

Contrary to Marwat’s claims, the prosecution insisted that Khan receives superior amenities at Attock Jail. According to the Assistant Advocate General, efforts to improve the former prime minister’s conditions include enhanced bathroom facilities, a television and a selection of newspapers to his cell, and personalized meal plans featuring dishes cooked in desi ghee. Furthermore, Khan has access to medical care, with five appointed doctors attending to his health needs.

Despite these improvements, the court expressed concern over the feasibility of transporting Khan from Attock to Islamabad for court appearances, given the extensive travel time required. Acknowledging that Khan is detained for another ongoing case, the court adjourned, instructing Marwat to consult with Khan before the next hearing scheduled for September 11. The IHC is actively seeking more information regarding the rationale behind Khan’s ongoing detention at Attock Jail, even after the suspension of his sentence in the Toshakhana case.
