In a recent cybersecurity incident, Curtis James Jackson III, popularly known as 50 Cent, fell victim to hackers who compromised his social media and website to conduct a cryptocurrency scam.
The perpetrators used his X account (formerly Twitter) and his site, Thisis50.com, leveraging his 12.9 million followers to promote and sell the meme token GUNIT fraudulently. This scam resulted in $3 million in losses for victims within just 30 minutes.
50 Cent reported the incident on his Instagram, stating, “My Twitter and Thisis50.com were hacked. I have no association with this crypto. Twitter worked quickly to lock my account back down. Whoever did this made $3,000,000 in 30 minutes.” He emphasized that he was not involved with the GUNIT token, part of a ‘rug pull’, a scam where developers flee with investors’ funds, leaving worthless assets behind.
The rapper’s Instagram update included screenshots showing the rapid surge in the “$GUNIT” token’s market value, which initially was under $1 million. Following the exposure, 50 Cent regained control over his accounts and has since distanced himself from any connections to the cryptocurrency.
