On Friday, the Iranian embassy in Islamabad announced the release of 28 Pakistani prisoners from Iranian custody. This action follows a recent agreement made during the Iranian President’s visit to Pakistan, emphasizing Islamic compassion and humanitarian objectives.
The embassy issued a brief statement explaining that the prisoners were repatriated to Pakistan, with their sentences suspended to strengthen bilateral relations.
Before this development, 160 Pakistani nationals were detained in Iran, while Pakistan held 60 Iranian prisoners.
During President Ebrahim Raisi’s visit last month, the Iranian government suggested a mutual release of detainees on humanitarian grounds.
In response, Federal Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazeer Tarar, after discussions with Iran’s Deputy Justice Minister for Human Rights and International Affairs Dr. Askar Galailan, agreed to the proposal, indicating it would proceed via the interior ministry.
