The 2026 International Booker Prize shortlist has been revealed, featuring six powerful translated works of fiction that span diverse regions, time periods, and literary styles. This prestigious award recognises the best fiction translated into English and published in the UK or Ireland.

It brings important global voices to a wider international audience. The selected titles take readers from 1930s Japanese-occupied Taiwan to post-revolutionary Iran, Nazi-era Germany, a remote Albanian village, a Brazilian penal colony, and suburban France.

Common Themes: Control, Freedom, and Human Struggle. A strong connecting thread across the shortlist is the theme of control and restricted freedom. Each novel explores how characters grapple with powerful historical, political, and social forces that shape their lives. These stories reflect both personal and political struggles, offering deep insights into historical upheavals, cultural traditions, identity, exile, resistance, and resilience.

  • She Who Remains by Rene Karabash, translated from Bulgarian by Izidora Angel
A debut novel set in a remote Albanian village, exploring forced marriage, identity, tradition, and a young woman’s journey of self-discovery.
  • The Director by Daniel Kehlmann, translated from German by Ross Benjamin
A fictionalised account of filmmaker G.W. Pabst in Nazi Germany. This marks the second nomination for this author-translator pair.

  • Taiwan Travelogue by Yáng Shuāng-zǐ, translated from Mandarin Chinese by Lin King
A bittersweet story following a culinary writer’s journey through Japanese-occupied Taiwan, blending romance with themes of colonialism, language, history, and power.

Notable Highlights: The shortlist includes two debut novels and features several author-translator pairs with previous nominations. This year particularly celebrates female voices: five of the six authors and four of the six translators are women.

The books represent eight countries and four continents. The International Booker Prize continues to play a vital role in promoting translated literature and cross-cultural storytelling worldwide. Official Sources
