The 2026 International Booker Prize shortlist has been revealed, featuring six powerful translated works of fiction that span diverse regions, time periods, and literary styles. This prestigious award recognises the best fiction translated into English and published in the UK or Ireland.
It brings important global voices to a wider international audience. The selected titles take readers from 1930s Japanese-occupied Taiwan to post-revolutionary Iran, Nazi-era Germany, a remote Albanian village, a Brazilian penal colony, and suburban France.
Common Themes: Control, Freedom, and Human Struggle. A strong connecting thread across the shortlist is the theme of control and restricted freedom. Each novel explores how characters grapple with powerful historical, political, and social forces that shape their lives. These stories reflect both personal and political struggles, offering deep insights into historical upheavals, cultural traditions, identity, exile, resistance, and resilience.
