The 2025 NBA All-Star Game, held on Sunday, introduced a new format to enhance the experience. Unfortunately, fans and analysts criticized the event and saw it as a failure.
The NBA introduced a three-game mini-tournament to make the All-Star Game more competitive. However, one of the teams didn’t even feature All-Stars, which sparked frustration. Draymond Green and others, including TNT analysts, were discontent with the decision.
The opening game between Team Chuck and Team Kenny initially showed promise with players like Victor Wembanyama and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, but the focus quickly shifted away from basketball. TNT’s Kenny Smith hinted that the experiment would likely be abandoned in future seasons.
Kevin Hart’s Overwhelming Presence
While the basketball action struggled to hold viewers’ attention, the entertainment segments became even more problematic. Kevin Hart took centre stage with excessive commentary and forced comedy bits, many of which felt out of place. His remarks, particularly about Shaquille O’Neal’s outfit, received heavy backlash.
Additionally, unnecessary stoppages, like the extended Mr. Beast promotion, only increased frustration. The interruption included a $100,000 giveaway, which many felt was a distraction from the actual game.
The most puzzling break occurred during the championship game when Team Shaq led 11-1. Play was halted for a nearly 20-minute tribute to the TNT broadcast crew, which many fans found excessive and irritating.
Player Frustration
Even the players showed signs of frustration. Trae Young voiced his dissatisfaction postgame, emphasizing that fans want to see basketball, not a series of interruptions.
What was once a highlight on the NBA calendar turned into an overproduced spectacle that left fans longing for the days of simpler broadcasts. The 2025 All-Star Game is now considered one of the worst in history, with NBA analyst Kevin O’Connor bluntly stating, “Worst All-Star ‘Game’ EVER.”
With the NBA’s media rights shifting next year, fans hope that NBC will refocus the event on the game itself, as Sunday’s debacle made it clear that a change is needed.
