At least 14 people were killed and dozens others were injured in fog related accidents in various parts of Punjab on Thursday.

In a deadly mishap caused by misty conditions 15 vehicles were jumbled up at motorway at Sukheki point in Pindi Bhattian leaving around 10 people dead and more than 70 persons injured. The injured were transferred to nearby hospital for medical treatment.

In another fatal accident at national highway near Bahawalpur, a truck collided with a van. At least three people were killed and scores of others were injured in the incident. Some of the injured were said to be in a precarious condition.

Moreover, in a head on collision between two vehicles at Jhang Road in Faisalabad two people were killed and four others were injured.

Ten people sustained injuries when a loader and a truck collided near Sudhar Bypass. A Mazda uptured at Diwan Sahib road in Borewala leaving 15 persons injured.

Fog descends over the plains of Punjab as the weather turns cold, lowering the range of visibility at the motorways and other roads.

Motorway Police today announced that the motorway M-III from Pindi Bhattian to Faisalabad, section M-II from Pindi Bhattian to Lahore and Faisalabad to Gojra section of the motorway were closed by the police as the fog engulfs the area lowering the visibility.

The motorway police has advised people to avoid over-speed and unnecessary travel in the ongoing weather conditions. A spokesman has also advised drivers to use fog lights and wipers while traveling on roads.

As winter descends, northern Punjab have been engulfed by a thick layer of fog affecting the daily life. The fog understood to be a natural phenomenon, is a noxious smog carrying serious health hazards.

Smog is basically derived from the merger of two words; smoke and fog which means that smog is a mixture of smoke and fog, created by increasing vehicular and industrial emissions in modern cities.
