At least eleven daily-wage employees of the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) have been fired for protesting against the government’s decision to privatise the national airline in violation of the Essential Services (Maintenance) Act.
The workers who had brought the PIA’s flight operations to its knees during their crippling eight-day strike are now facing the wrath of the airline management.
The pilots, engineers and union leaders who were also part of the demonstrations across the country remain safe. Only the drivers, loaders and office boys have been shown the door. On the other hand, the major players of the PIA employees’ Joint Action Committee have only been issued show-cause notices.
JAC spokesperson Nasrullah said that more than 500 show-cause letters had been issued. The body has requested the HR director to withdraw the notices and termination letters.
