The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet earlier today banned export of donkey hides till the time when a regulatory mechanism was put in place by the provinces for proper disposal of carcasses of the animals.
The ECC, which met here with Finance Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar in the chair, took the decision amid media reports that donkey meat was being sold in the market for human consumption.
The meeting asked the Ministry of National Food Security and Research to convey the decision to the provincial governments to ensure that a proper mechanism for disposal of remains of the donkeys was enforced as early as possible.
The donkey population in Pakistan has increased by 400,000 in the past few years according to media sources.
